OBJECTIVE: To present the clinical case of an adrenal ganglioneuroma diagnosed incidentally in an adult
BACKGROUND: The ganglioneuroma is a benign, rare and slow-growing tumor that is formed from primitive sympathetic neurons of the neural crest, formed by mature ganglion cells together with Schwann cells with no malignant potential. They are located more frequently in the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneal regions, only 15-30% of cases will be in the adrenal gland. They are non-secretory tumors of catecholamines or steroid hormones and usually occur in patients younger than 40 years. Histologically, a mixture of ganglion cells and Schwann cells, lobes of mature adipose tissue is evident and mitosis, atypia or necrosis are not evident. Most cases are asymptomatic and the diagnosis is usually incidental by imaging studies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a case of adrenal ganglioneuroma, incidentally diagnosed with tomography in a 36-year-old patient with a single history of arterial hypertension.
RESULTS: Resection and histopathological study confirmed the diagnosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Ganglioneuromas are lesions that are usually asymptomatic and their diagnosis is incidental by imaging studies. The prognosis is good secondary to surgical resection.
