Comparative Study of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Weighing More Than 80 Grams Treated by Transurethral Resection of the Prostate and Simple Open Prostatectomy in the Urology Department of the San Juan de Dios General Hospital 2021-2023

OBJECTIVES: To compare surgical time between TUR and PSA as well as to determine the need for transfusions between these procedures and to establish post-surgical hospital time for discharge between both surgical techniques during the years 2021-2023 at the San Juan de Dios General Hospital in Guatemala. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cases of BPH with weight greater than 80 g during the years 2021 to 2023 in the Urology service of the Surgery Department of the San Juan de Dios General Hospital were included in the study. CONCLUSIONS: Patients diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia were mostly patients over 60 years of age. There is a statistically significant difference between the surgical techniques of PSA and TUR with respect to the surgical time, which was longer in TUR, and in terms of days of hospitalization, it was shorter in TUR. No patient undergoing TUR required blood transfusion.
