Urinary retention is a term used to describe the situation in which the bladder cannot be emptied completely or does not empty at all. It can present acutely, chronically and the chronic presentation can be exacerbated. Acute urinary retention (AUR) is a common urological emergency, characterized by the inability to evacuate urine accompanied in some cases by pain.
