Abstract

General Objective of the Study: The objective of this work is to report the adjusted specific incidence of genitourinary cancer during the period from January 1, 2013 to July 31, 2017; in the geographic area of the Province of Colón, Republic of Panama.

Materials and Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study in which all patients with a histological diagnosis of some type of genitourinary cancer (bladder, prostate, kidney, penis and testicle) were collected from January 2013 to July 2017. All tumors were classified according to international guidelines. ; according to his anatomopathological strain. The adjusted (standardized) incidence rates for each 100,000 inhabitants were calculated.

Results: According to the records of the Ministry of Health and the Hospital Complex Dr. Manuel Amador Guerrero there was a population increase in the period studied of 16,627 inhabitants, averaging an increase of 4,156.75 inhabitants / year. A total of 103 cases of genitourinary tumors were diagnosed during the period studied, with a gradual increase in the annual incidence of 5.9 to 9.1 cases / 100,000 inhabitants.

The distribution by sex was 93.2% male and 6.79% female. In the male sex there was a sustained increase in the incidence from 10.4 to 16.1 in parallel with the increase in the population. 61% of patients were in the age group between 51-80 years.

The most frequent anatomical site was the prostate with 65 cases, followed by a bladder with 24 and a penis with 6 cases. Adenocarcinoma was the most frequent histological strain in prostate tumors in 98% of cases. The bladder tumor, the second most frequent, with 24 cases and 62.5% of these was transitional cell carcinoma. The totality of the penile tumors in our study resulted from being squamous.

Conclusions: The most common type of genitourinary cancer was prostate cancer, followed by bladder and penis. The incidence rate of genitourinary cancer for the province of Colon in general has increased in the last five years; except kidney and testis, this increase was sustained in male patients.
