Abstract

Introduction: extracoporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a type of kidney stone management. Despite this, there is evidence in this regard related to an apparent damage to the renal parenchyma. The idea of this work is to identify the incidence of renal lesions, as well as the location of the stone and its influence on renal damage. Material and Methods: Based on the work carried out by Ma. J. Cancho Gil et. al. a prospective longitudinal study was conducted in 22 patients with normal renal function undergoing ESWL. The basal level of microalbuminuria was determined, at 24 hours, at the 4th. and at 10th. day post-ESWL. Results: The baseline levels of microalbuminuria did not show a significant difference with respect to the location of the renal lithiasis (with a p value >0.05). An increase in the level of microalbuminuria was observed only at 24 hours post ESWL (with a statistically significant value of p<000.1). No significant differences were observed in the variation of microalbuminuria levels with treatment in relation to stone location (with a value of p>0.05). Conclusions: Our series showed that glomerular damage occurs after ESWL. This damage is independent of the location of the stone, whether in the renal pelvis or in the upper and middle calyx. In patients with previous normal kidney function, kidney damage recovers on day 4 post ESWL.
