Abstract

AIM: To present the clinical characteristics of the patients as well as the experience in the management of patients diagnosed with penile cancer during the year 2021 at the San Juan de Dios General Hospital in Guatemala. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A search was made for cases of penile cancer during the year 2021 at the San Juan de Dios General Hospital, only cases with histopathological diagnosis and complete file were included. RESULTS: In the year 2021, 5 patients with penile cancer between 45 and 76 years of age were found. Overall, the following risk factors were identified: phimosis, chronic penile inflammation, rural origin, low socioeconomic status, single, multiple partners. Three patients were treated by total penectomy with perineal urethrostomy and two by partial penectomy. Superficial and deep inguinal lymphadenectomy was performed on four patients. Patients with two or more positive nodes received adjuvant chemotherapy. Among the complications observed by lymphadenectomy were lymphorrhea, lymphedema and necrosis at the edges of the wounds. CONCLUSIONS: Penile cancer is a rare disease, identifying and modifying risk factors make it preventable for most. The most important prognostic factor for penile cancer survival is regional lymph node status, so treatment with inguinal lymphadenectomy for intermediate- and high-risk patients is crucial. Inguinal lymphadenectomy is not without complications; however, the benefits of such procedures outweigh the risks.
