Introduction: Retroperitoneal tumors are neoplasic atypical diseases, it is common that patients start to manifest symptoms when the illness is already in an advanced stage. The retroperitoneum consists of a wide diversity of organs and soft tissues. Because of this, the histologic origin of these tumors can vary, all of which marks a starting point to establish multiple differential diagnosis. Objective: To assess and analyze the 5-years experience in the management of retroperitoneal tumors at Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out, which included all patients diagnosed with a retroperitoneal tumor and admitted by the general surgery department of Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras during 2018-2022. Results: This series included 17 patients. The median of age was 54 years with 64% of women. Abdominal tomography was the main imaging method used. The most frequent histology was sarcoma. 70.5% of procedures were described as complete surgical resection, nephrectomy was performed in 23.5% of all cases. Intraoperative complications were presented in 41% of patients. 41% of patients received neoadjuvant therapy. The survival analysis could only be performed in 82.3% of the sample. Conclusion: Retroperitoneal tumors are neoplasic atypical diseases, which diagnosis is made incidentally or when the illness is already in an advanced stage. Prognosis and treatment are a challenge because of the high recurrence of this disease. Complete surgical resection is the only curative treatment because of the poor response to chemotherapy. The collaboration between the departments of surgery, oncology, radiology and pathology are the most important pillar to determine a positive prognosis towards the patient.
