Abstract

INTRODUCTION: In 2019, the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) 1 infection quickly altered global health systems and changed the dynamics of life worldwide. Beyond the respiratory system, studies have recently suggested that the virus may target the lower urinary tract due to the presence of ACE2 receptors on urothelial cells 4. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to show the currently available literature data on lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with SARS-COV-2 infection, to provide a timely overview, and to develop a desire for further studies and research on the topic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the present article, an analysis of publications about the alterations generated by COVID in the urinary tract is carried out. RESULTS: In the urinary tract, an inflammatory picture of the bladder urothelium is generated, generating what is known as CAC (Cystitis Associated with Covid) 1. DISCUSSION: Although the genitourinary system is not considered among the systems most affected by COVID-19, it is of utmost importance that urologists consider the evidence around the world of urinary symptoms in patients with SARS-COV-2. CONCLUSIONS: The data highlighted in this review demonstrate that patients with COVID-19 present signs and symptoms indicative of bladder hyperactivity. In addition, urinary symptoms may occur during the prodromal and post-COVID periods.
