Use of Botulinum Toxin in Female Patients with Overactive Bladder in Patients of the Urology Unit of the General Hospital of Diseases of the Guatemalan Institute of Social Security.

Background: Overactive bladder affects the quality of life of patients and in severe cases where patients do not respond to medical treatment or the latter is contraindicated, intravesical botulinum toxin injection is a therapeutic modality
Methods: A descriptive study was conducted on 18 patients of the Department of Urology at the Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social’s General Hospital on whom botulinum toxin was used in overactive bladder cases. The study was done by way of analytic interpretación of King´s Questionnaire before and after botulinum toxin administation.
Results: There was an 88 % positive response, perceived as an improvement in the quality of life of the patients. The were also certain adverse effects such post void residual with resulting urinary tract infection and even catheterization.
Conclusion: The use of botulinum toxin injection in severe cases of overactive bladder is beneficial and can therefore improve the quality of life of patients.
